BYLAWS IN SELWYN

Return to bylaws main page

What is a Bylaw?

A bylaw is a rule or regulation, made by a local council, which:

  • affects the public,

  • orders something to be done, or not to be done, and
  • has some form of penalty for failing to comply.

Bylaws are:

  • relevant to the local community, and
  • suited to local conditions.

A local authority can only make a bylaw if it has been empowered  to do so by an Act of Parliament. Most bylaws are made under the Local Government Act 2002, but some are made under a combination of the Local Government Act and other acts. Bylaws are only made to cover significant issues.

For further information please contact Keri Harrison, Bylaw Analyst, (03) 347 2800 or 318 8338.
