SURVEYS

Community Surveys

Our 2009 Residents Survey is now underway. Its purpose is to give Selwyn's "silent majority" a voice and to get vital feedback on how we can improve our services and facilities to a changing district.

To achieve its purpose, the survey needs to hear from everyone - especially the "silent majority" whose views we seldom get to hear. So, if an interviewer phones you, please don't hang up. Think of it as an opportunity to improve your community by telling the Council what needs doing.

The survey is anonymous, the phone numbers are random and our interviewers have ID numbers which are refreshed daily. So, if you have any doubts about the authenticity of the interviewer, please get their name and ID number, and ask them to call back after you have had a chance to confirm the details with the Council.

Why Survey?

The Council conducts surveys to:

  • identify community needs, desires and concerns

  • get feedback on our services, projects and proposals

  • measure changes in 'community outcomes' which are indicators of environmental, economic, social and cultural well-being in the district

  • measure 'before and after' outcomes

  • profile the social and demographic changes in our district

Examples include:

  • 2007 Residents Survey [PDF 520 kb]

  • 2006 LTCCP Outcomes Survey [PDF 510 kb]

  • 2005 Residents Survey [PDF 85 kb]

  • 2004 Community Safety Survey [PDF 55 kb]

  • 2003 Business Survey [PDF 130 kb]

  • Residents and community surveys

Our residents and community surveys are conducted by telephone with large samples (typically 1,000) and high response rates (typically in the 60-80% range).

    Frequently Asked Questions.

    Other surveys

Most of our other surveys are conducted through self report forms, either delivered through the post or made available on online. Typically, the response rates to these are less than 30% and sometimes as low as 1%. For this reason, they should be seen more as consultation exercises rather than statistically accurate representations of residents' views.

    Community Outcomes Questionnaires

The LTCCP Outcomes Questionnaires are self report forms that go to all ratepayers in a given area, rather than to a random sample. Typically, responses are from those who feel strongest about particular issues, rather than the general 'silent majority'.

The purpose of these questionnaires is to give residents an opportunity to say which community outcomes they want included in our Long-term Council Community Plan (LTCCP). These self-report postal surveys have been conducted in the following areas:

    1. Broadfield  [PDF 2000 Kb]

    2. Darfield [PDF 650 Kb]

    3. Kirwee-Courtenay-Kimberley

    4. Ladbrooks [PDF 2000 Kb]

    5. Lake Coleridge [PDF 720 Kb]

    6. Lakeside-Sedgemere-Southbridge

    7. Leeston-Doyleston

    8. Greenpark-Motukarara

    9. Springston-Springston South
